The series is set in the year 2517, after the arrival of humans in a new star system, and follows the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a “Firefly-class” spaceship. The ensemble cast portrays the nine characters who live on Serenity. The episode of Firefly explored the relationship between Zoë and Mal, which was based on mutual respect rather than sexual or romantic chemistry. Wash’s jealousy of their closeness was explored, as was Niska’s intellectual exercise of torture and River’s power to read thoughts. The whole crew, except for Kaylee, who was too afraid to shoot a gun, took up arms to rescue Mal, and River came up out of nowhere and shot three guards flawlessly. Tom and Megan discussed the differences in maturity between Zoe and Wash and the difference between males and females. They concluded that the relationship between Zoe and Mal was one of a commanding officer and a subordinate officer, and Wash gained a better understanding of the relationship between Zoe and Mal.
