Firefly – Episode 10, War Stories: Respect Over Romance

Megan and I go in a different direction for our next sci-fi series as we take up the 2002 series Firefly. The show is an American space Western drama television series. The series is set in the year 2517, after the arrival of humans in a new star system, and follows the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a “Firefly-class” spaceship. The ensemble cast portrays the nine characters who live on Serenity. Join the dynamic and delightful hosts Tom Fox and Megan Dougherty as they dive into the latest episode of Firefly in their podcast, Because That’s What Heroes Do!

The episode of Firefly explored the relationship between Zoë and Mal, which was based on mutual respect rather than sexual or romantic chemistry. Wash’s jealousy of their closeness was explored, as was Niska’s intellectual exercise of torture and River’s power to read thoughts. The whole crew, except for Kaylee, who was too afraid to shoot a gun, took up arms to rescue Mal, and River came up out of nowhere and shot three guards flawlessly. Tom and Megan discussed the differences in maturity between Zoe and Wash and the difference between males and females. They concluded that the relationship between Zoe and Mal was one of a commanding officer and a subordinate officer, and Wash gained a better understanding of the relationship between Zoe and Mal.

Key Highlights:

·      Niska’s return

·      Some philosophy

·      When is a 3rd wheel not a 3rd wheel
