Lazaro Baez was recently sentenced to 12 years in jail for money laundering in Argentina, charges that connected him to political powers still at large in the country. This international case revealed deeply rooted corruption and strong headwinds against uncovering critical evidence – but that did not stop Mariano Federici, the former head of Argentina’s Financial Intelligence Unit, from continuing to dig in.

In episode 8 of Digging Deeper, Mariano shares with Chris Morgan Jones how the investigation unfolded and what the future of related cases may be. As Mariano notes, “When the world is set to cooperate, there is no good place to hide.”

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.
One of the best parts of GWIC is that we get the opportunity to speak with some of the trailblazers in our field. In the next two episodes, Lisa talks with Pat Harned, the CEO of the Ethics and Compliance Initiative (ECI). Today, Lisa gets to learn about Pat’s background, what led her to working at ECI and how the organization evolved before and during her leadership. Pat talks about her experience as a woman in our field and as a CEO,
This first episode also discusses what ECI does, including the recent ECI IMPACT 2021 conference which was at the end of April. The keynotes and discussions included speakers from outside the E&C function, providing a different perspective in areas like corporate culture. Corporate culture is also a significant part of the Global Business Ethics Survey Trends Report, what was also released this year. Pat highlights some of the key findings, and a few surprises they saw along the way, and how we can take a critical look at our function to work towards a more diverse profession as a whole.

In this edition of Cordery Head to Head @ Home Cordery’s Jonathan Armstrong talks to Roy Snell. Roy Snell recently retired as the CEO of the Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA) and the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics (SCCE). Together these associations now total more than 15,000 members. Roy was a co-founder and the organization’s first President.
Roy joins us from his home in Minneapolis.
Since retiring Roy has written two books on compliance – The Accidental Compliance Professional (see https://bit.ly/2ORnUh3) and IntegrityWorks: Tools and Skills To Build Integrity (see https://bit.ly/3jB5fUV).
They talk about a wide range of issues facing modern companies including the response to COVID-19 and how compliance officers have a role to play in modern business. They talk about the professionalization of compliance and the changes since the first meeting of compliance professionals in 2002. They talk about the 4 essential elements for a compliance officer outlined in Integrity Works and give real-life examples including the need to identify ‘helpful liars’ when dealing with compliance issues. They also talk about critical thinking and how to think and act in a crisis.
