Wendy Badger-Compliance from Soup to Nuts

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.

Mary and Lisa end the second GWIC semester with Wendy Badger. Wendy is Global Compliance Counsel at Tennant Company, where she oversees their global ethics and compliance program. She has worked in-house and in law firms, taking her experiences from one space and applying them to others. She is also an author, regular speaker, friend, and mentor to many – and one of the “OG GWICS” who has made this community grow.

Lisa and Wendy discuss a number of different topics, starting with remote investigations, which is top of mind for many of us these days. They talk about pitfalls, lessons learned, and some practical tips, including one from Wendy about how she makes interviewees more comfortable. They also talk about the impact of remote work on networking over the past few years, focusing on women and how that may change as the world continues to open up.

Wendy also shares some of her favorite advice and how she has made some of that advice her own. She also told Lisa what has now become one of the best stories about public speaking on the podcast!

GWIC is going on vacation for the next few weeks but will be back on July 20. We hope everyone remembers to take some time off – whether off social media, off from work, or just time for yourself.

Wendy Badger-What is Bravery?

The Compliance Life details the journey to and in the role of a Chief Compliance Officer. How does one come to sit in the CCO chair? What are some of the skills a CCO needs to success navigate the compliance waters in any company? What are some of the top challenges CCOs have faced and how did they meet them? These questions and many others will be explored in this new podcast series. Over four episodes each month on The Compliance Life, I visit with one current or former CCO to explore their journey to the CCO chair. This month, my guest is Wendy Badger, CCO at Tennant Company.

In this concluding episode, Wendy reflected on leaving her CCO position immediately preceding the pandemic and the time she had for reflection about that decision and what she learned about herself. She talked about her new role a Tennant and some key lessons learned she has been able to put into places such as the criticality of cross-functional collaboration, why technology should not be seen as the “cure all” to compliance woes and how to both layer and leverage data.

Wendy further elaborated on her non-traditional career path, where she found sometimes you must change your career ladder to advance your career. From the trade association, she went in-house with an accounts receivable management organization. She was the first and only lawyer on staff. The work provided both challenges and opportunities in the role. From there she decided to move into private practice, found out how it was different from in-house roles and ultimately decided to move back in-house.

Wendy knew she wanted to be a lawyer long before she went to law school. She was the first person in her family to graduate from college and then obtain an advanced degree.   She talked about some of the challenges she faced and the support and mentorship she received. We then discussed her early legal career – immediate jump to compliance in the early 2000s through a very non-traditional path of joining an international trade association where she found passion for and niche in compliance.
