Sometimes, the answer lies in retooling your current career or finding ways to add meaning within your existing role.

 

Alison introduces the concept of job crafting, which involves customizing and reshaping your role to make it more fulfilling. This can include altering tasks, building relationships, and changing your perspective on the value you bring to your work. Taking responsibility for your own happiness and finding ways to add meaning can transform your experience. Reinvention and change don’t always have to be radical. Small tweaks and adjustments in your career and life can have a significant impact. Setting two to three solid goals at a time and working towards them can lead to increased life satisfaction and success.

 

Both Mary Ann and Alison emphasize that no one else is responsible for your happiness and fulfillment in life. It’s essential to take ownership of your own journey and make the necessary changes to improve your situation. If you’re unhappy, it’s up to you to take action and find solutions.

Trekking Through Compliance – Episode 14 – Balance of Terror

In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode Balance of Terror, which aired on December 15, 1966, Star Date 1709.1
Enterprise investigates the lack of response from Earth outposts 2 and 3, monitoring the Neutral Zone between planets Romulus and Remus and the rest of the galaxy. The Earth outposts have been constructed on asteroids and were authorized by treaty following the atomic war with the Romulans more than a century earlier. No human or Romulan, however, has ever seen the other.

As the Enterprise communicates with Outpost 4, Commander Hansen reports an attack underway by an unknown weapon from a spaceship which subsequently vanished. The Romulan commander questions his mission of starting a war and discusses it with his Centurion. The Enterprise and Romulan ship exchange fire. The Enterprise then sits motionless, hoping the Romulan ship will make a move and reveal itself. They do so, and the Romulan ship is rendered inoperative, and its captain self-destructs.

Spry and vibrant at 93, I met John after he had published his 7th book in 92. As I got to know him and his life story, I wanted him to share his amazing and inspiring journey from Niagara Falls in the 1930s to his current life in the Hill Country of Texas. Overcoming a humiliating incident at age 8, John was the first in his family to go to college, served in the Air Force, became a teacher and the principal, and retired from his first career. It’s art, let’s talk about it – James Muir on the Importance of Finding Inspiration in Art

Muir, for example, discusses how his sculpture of military troopers being attacked during a retreat tells a story of courage in the face of danger. He strives to depict the highest and best aspects of humanity through his work. The impact of spouses in shaping artists’ careers is explored as well. Muir’s wife Linda is considered the driving force behind their work.

1.     First, learn about the historical importance of allegory and how it has been used over the centuries.

2.     Second, understand the purpose of symbology in art and how it enables the masses to learn about life and spirituality.

3.     Third, appreciate the hidden meanings behind the artwork that Muir creates.

As Muir states “Symbolism is an international language. It tells us stories that we cannot necessarily put into words. If you are curious about allegorical art and love to appreciate the intricate artwork that has a deep meaning behind it, this episode is highly recommended.”

31 Days to More Effective Compliance Programs

One Month to a More Effective Compliance Program with Boards – Board Governance and Risk Oversight

One of the ongoing questions from members of the Board of Directors is how to resolve the tension between oversight and management. I recently had the opportunity to visit with Joe Howell, former Executive Vice President (EVP) of Workiva, Inc., on this subject. Howell has worked on and with Boards of Directors at various companies, and I wanted to garner his understanding of the role of a Board, senior management, and a Chief Compliance Officer (CCO). Howell’s short response was an excellent starting point for understanding the role; put sand in management’s shoes.

The key to such a metaphor succeeding is that a Board of Directors, “by continuing to challenge management on these scenarios that management has considered and the stories management is telling itself about what could go wrong,” can “help get management out of its comfort zone by and large executive teams begin to believe themselves when they talk about how well they’re doing. The independent challenge that the board can offer is putting a little bit of sand in the shoe to make sure you’re thinking about things carefully can cause you to step back and focus your resources where they’re needed.”

Howell noted that the role of the Board is not management but oversight, focusing on governance. To do so, an effective Board should challenge senior management not only on what they have planned for but what they may not have considered or may not even know about. He said, “One perfect example is the reputation of those stakeholders involved in the company, and that can be the management team itself, the employees, and the board members themselves.” This is because reputational damage hurts everyone. Howell stated, “It’s essential as we go through some ways the Board can help management in that role. I think the things that make a difference to management is when the Board can be an effective devil’s advocate. Not managing management but helping them in their governing role by helping management to step back and think critically of their underlying assumptions and biases.”

A Board is more than just there to be a rubber stamp for senior management. It must exercise independent judgment, action, and oversight. Further, it is the Board’s role to ask hard, difficult, and probing questions to ensure management is doing its job and has considered other risk possibilities.
