Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.
Wow…100 episodes! It seems like yesterday and eons ago at the same time that we talked about starting the GWIC podcast. A little over 2 years and at episode 100 it seemed like a great time to reflect on where we started and the amazing community that has grown around the GWIC community.
In this episode, Mary and Lisa share some listener feedback about what has resonated with them, what they have learned, and some wonderful memories about past discussions. They also give out some “GWICies,” which are recognition of some different organizations, people and work in the E&C community and also a “thank you” to many who help them put together the episodes and keep the podcast and the community evolving.
GWIC will be taking a spring hiatus, but we are excited to be back on April 21st with new episodes. And, thank YOU for making the Great Women in Compliance podcast what it has become today.
We like to share advice and tips on the podcast via our learned guests but some things don’t have immediate answers, including some aspects of what we’ve canvassed today. If you’d like to share your thoughts on the issues raised, we invite you to connect with us at GWICpod@gmail.com.

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.
As many of you know, Mary and Lisa have been working on a book that will be coming out before the holidays and will be the first title from CCI Press. The “GWIC Book” (the title will be announced soon), is a compilation of submissions from women in compliance sharing wit, wisdom and experiences from their work and lives.
This process was new to Mary and Lisa, and they provide some insight into the process of being a first-time author up until this point. They talk about the importance of having a good publisher and editor as they had with Sarah Hadden of CCI Press, and how they were guided and supported through this process. They also talk about how the GWIC Book is a companion to the podcast, and that it is about women and their experiences in ethics and compliance as opposed to substantive guides and information.
They also talk about their biggest surprises, what they learned about themselves and the GWIC community (spoiler alert: it reinforced what an enthusiastic and supportive community we have); and a little bit about the book release and launch events.

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.
When someone new joins a team, we often think about onboarding from the manager and the new employee’s perspective, but often we may think less frequently about how that person’s team will be impacted in their work and as team members.
In this episode of GWIC, Lisa speaks with two of her peers at Pearson as she is reflecting on her first-year anniversary. Sarah Powell is Compliance Counsel and Director, Third Party Anti-Bribery and Corruption Compliance and Cindy Merlino is the Global Ethics and Compliance Specialist, and both spent considerable time to do everything they could to set Lisa up for success.
We discuss how they support a new team member, from preparing pre-first day to the onboarding process, and provide tips on how to do that successfully while continuing their work. We also talk about integrating new people and what qualities are important to them in a new team member.
Finally, Sarah is from South Africa and just returned there from London so we get a view on South Africa’s self-quarantine and how past ethics and compliance issues impact the current situation. Cindy, like so many Americans, is adjusting to homeschooling while continuing her own work.
