Great Women in Compliance – Lisa Fine on Change, Culture and Community

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, hosted by Mary Shirley and Lisa Fine.

A few years ago, Lisa committed to doing one solo episode a year, and here is the 2023 episode.  As she prepared (which is always a strange experience as it isn’t for a conversation with someone else, but a soliloquy), this became a theme of “threes” – she talks about 3 topics, all of which start with “C” the third letter of the alphabet.   These are change, culture and community.

In the change section, she gives some spoiler updates on the GWIC 2.0 format, among other things.  She also talks about some of the things on her mind about organizational culture and how that has changed – and not changed – as we continue into a post-pandemic life.  Lastly, in terms of community, she reflects on our E&C community, some exciting upcoming events and her appreciation of all of the support in moving forward from Mary and so many #GWICs.

Corporate Compliance Insights is a much-appreciated sponsor and supporter of GWIC, including affiliate organization CCI Press publishing the related book; “Sending the Elevator Back Down, What We’ve Learned from Great Women in Compliance” (CCI Press, 2020). If you enjoyed the book, the GWIC team would be very grateful if you would consider rating it on Goodreads and Amazon and leaving a short review.  Don’t forget to send the elevator back down by passing on your copy to someone who you think might enjoy reading it when you’re done, or if you can’t bear parting with your copy, consider it as a holiday or appreciation gift for someone in Compliance who deserves a treat.

Great Women in Compliance – Joe Murphy as the Great Waltzer in Compliance

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, hosted by Mary Shirley and Lisa Fine.

A #GWIC can be lots of things – which is one of the best parts of this community. Today’s guest is a true advocate and supporter of women while also being one of the architects of this profession and one of our best.  It’s Joe Murphy, who co-authored the first book ever written on compliance, and is currently the Editor of Compliance and Ethics: Ideas and Answers.

Getting to know Joe is an honor and a privilege, and if you do, you will immediately learn about his passion for dance. He’s a #CCO and #GWIC in his role as Chief Cha-Cha Officer at Haddonfield Dance, and a Great Waltzer in Compliance.

Lisa was lucky to speak with this about and a number of other topics, including the genesis of Compliance and Ethics: Ideas and Answers. They also speak about what Joe sees as the best design for a CECO role to set them up for success, and about the power dynamics that are inherent in roles.

Just as the waltz can be done in a circle, we end with a discussion of what Joe has enjoyed and learned from dance that can be great lessons for life and life in compliance. Lisa and Mary are so grateful that Joe has spent some time with us.

Krista Muszak – She’s Simply the Best

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, hosted by Mary Shirley and Lisa Fine. It’s fitting that for this International Women’s Day that we feature one of the brightest sparks in the Ethics and Compliance space, Krista Muszak.

It can be difficult to change industries in Compliance. Some organizations look for exact industry experience and pigeonhole individuals into one track of practice. Krista is someone who manages to transition between industries with ease and offers her tips for doing so.

She shares a bit about what it’s like to focus on SOX Compliance, as she did in her previous role and now on Mergers and Acquisitions risk, which she is doing now. Congratulations to Krista on her new role!

Mary’s favorite part of this episode is when Krista talks about who she admires (spoiler alert, it’s one of the GWIC team), closely followed by a fabulous and innovative idea Krista shares to help sales folk look at Compliance from another angle that also serves the purpose of acting as a gap analysis for Compliance. You’ll want to listen to this episode to be inspired by and leverage from Krista’s creative brilliance.

Lisa and Mary wish everyone an amazing International Women’s Day. We are pleased to recognize our peers for your fierce and formidable accomplishments. Keep shining!

Julie Bregnard – Moving on Up

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, hosted by Mary Shirley and Lisa Fine. The Great Women in Compliance podcast’s guest for this week is Julie Bregnard, a Compliance professional who is relatively early into her career and going places fast.  Mary interviews Julie with a special focus on the job search, as Julie has just moved into a new role after five years at her first “real” job.  As discussed in the GWIC New Year episode several weeks ago to kick off 2023, the market for certain levels of Compliance staff is extremely favorable now.  Julie and Mary share some tips for further increasing job hunter success in the search.

Julie also reflects on her time as a new graduate looking for her first job after university.  Mary asked Julie to give some tips on subject as she received a request to do an episode that is helpful to students.  Though further back in time, Mary still remembers how painful and demoralizing the search for your first professional full-time role can be and with this in mind, asked Julie to share some advice and encouragement for students on how to best stay motivated and on task throughout this time.

As a Compliance practitioner who has been instrumental in strategizing on and delivering multiple Compliance Week events to her internal stakeholders, Julie provides some insights on what she thinks makes for a good Compliance Week and takes a broader view on how you can leverage them for ongoing dialogue in an organization.

Ellen Hunt with the 2023 Hunt Report

If CEOs have Larry Fink’s Annual Letter to CEOs, then Lisa has Ellen Hunt’s “Hunt Report.”  Ellen is Principal Consultant Advisor at Spark Compliance and is well known as a mentor and advocate to many in the E&C community.

Ellen has finished her first year as a “Sparkie,” and will update us on how that is going and what she is seeing and learning through her work.  For the past few years, Lisa and Ellen have talked about retaliation and what we can do better to protect people who raise concerns and those who are witnesses in investigations.  While we have seen some improvements, there is still a long way to go.  They also look at this in light of organizational justice and our workplaces.

They also continue the discussions of the past few weeks about kindness, fairness and equality, and how these impact our programs.  This can impact how we collaborate with DEI and ESG teams, to ensure ethical workplaces.

One other way you can improve your workplace is with employee recognition, and Mary’s “Living Your Best Compliance Life” column at Corporate Compliance Insights can provide some great insights on the benefits of doing so and some ideas that can brighten someone’s day.

Damar Hamlin – Lessons in Leadership and Crisis Management

Welcome to the Sports and Compliance podcast. For the longest time, I have wanted to have a podcast on the intersection of Sports and the World of Compliance and Ethics, both for those stories as they play out on the Sports Page and for the lessons they provide to business executives and compliance professionals. In this podcast series, I am joined by one of the top compliance commentators, Stephen Martin, CCO at Skillsoft. Together, we will use our love of sports and competition to discuss current ethical issues in sports, look at compliance through a sports lens, and determine how the world of sports and its stories can guide the compliance professional.

In this episode, we are joined by Lisa Fine, co-host of the Great Women in Compliance podcast, Buffalo, NY native, and uber Buffalo Bills fan. We deep dive into the Damar Hamlin injury from the compliance and leadership perspectives. Our topics include:

  • Lisa’s reflections on the annus horribillus Buffalo had in 2022 and how the Bills are, in many ways they are the city’s glue.
  • How did we all feel watching it in live time?
  • What were the NFL’s policy and procedural failures in crisis response and management?
  • The leadership demonstrated by the coaches and players in the face of being told to return to play.
  • Why verifying information before reporting it is so critical?
  • The role of ESPN.
  • The role of the stadium EMS personnel.
  • This story has united the entire country in a way not seen for some time.

She also shares some perennial issues that are always worth keeping in mind as stones to turn over, an emerging risk for our radars, espouses a view on where Compliance audit should sit in the organization and thoughts on how Compliance can better work with internal audit.

GWIC x The Ethics Experts-Mary’s Episode

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.

For the next two weeks, the GWIC team are presenting a collab with ComplianceLine: GWIC X The Ethics Experts! Mary and Lisa start their throwback Wednesday sessions by harking all the way back to the early days of COVID19, where Mary’s episode was recorded while she was in the New Zealand coronavirus lockdown.

Gio Gallo interviewed Mary about her leadership style – especially focused on giving (junior) staff substantive, meaningful work and wings to fly while setting out a safety net, how not to slip into complacency in your Compliance program by being reassured of historical achievements, and understanding that there is no lowest common denominator. Learn how you can use surveys to tap into your most vulnerable areas you don’t even know you have.

Check out Lisa’s interview on the Ethics Experts here on the Great Women in Compliance Podcast on 19 October!

On 26 October, Mary and Lisa will return to their regular programming with a joint episode on learnings, insights, and observations from the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics Compliance and Ethics Institute. Want to be a part of the fun? Introduce yourself to Lisa and Mary at the conference – you’ll be able to spot them by their GWIC tote bags that Lisa kindly procured for the duo.
