Julie Bregnard – Moving on Up

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, hosted by Mary Shirley and Lisa Fine. The Great Women in Compliance podcast’s guest for this week is Julie Bregnard, a Compliance professional who is relatively early into her career and going places fast.  Mary interviews Julie with a special focus on the job search, as Julie has just moved into a new role after five years at her first “real” job.  As discussed in the GWIC New Year episode several weeks ago to kick off 2023, the market for certain levels of Compliance staff is extremely favorable now.  Julie and Mary share some tips for further increasing job hunter success in the search.

 Julie also reflects on her time as a new graduate looking for her first job after university.  Mary asked Julie to give some tips on subject as she received a request to do an episode that is helpful to students.  Though further back in time, Mary still remembers how painful and demoralizing the search for your first professional full-time role can be and with this in mind, asked Julie to share some advice and encouragement for students on how to best stay motivated and on task throughout this time.

 As a Compliance practitioner who has been instrumental in strategizing on and delivering multiple Compliance Week events to her internal stakeholders, Julie provides some insights on what she thinks makes for a good Compliance Week and takes a broader view on how you can leverage them for ongoing dialogue in an organization.

Ellen Hunt with the 2023 Hunt Report

If CEOs have Larry Fink’s Annual Letter to CEOs, then Lisa has Ellen Hunt’s “Hunt Report.”  Ellen is Principal Consultant Advisor at Spark Compliance and is well known as a mentor and advocate to many in the E&C community.

Ellen has finished her first year as a “Sparkie,” and will update us on how that is going and what she is seeing and learning through her work.  For the past few years, Lisa and Ellen have talked about retaliation and what we can do better to protect people who raise concerns and those who are witnesses in investigations.  While we have seen some improvements, there is still a long way to go.  They also look at this in light of organizational justice and our workplaces.

They also continue the discussions of the past few weeks about kindness, fairness and equality, and how these impact our programs.  This can impact how we collaborate with DEI and ESG teams, to ensure ethical workplaces.

One other way you can improve your workplace is with employee recognition, and Mary’s “Living Your Best Compliance Life” column at Corporate Compliance Insights can provide some great insights on the benefits of doing so and some ideas that can brighten someone’s day.

Damar Hamlin – Lessons in Leadership and Crisis Management

For the longest time, I have wanted to have a podcast on the intersection of Sports and the World of Compliance and Ethics, both for those stories as they play out on the Sports Page and for the lessons they provide to business executives and compliance professionals. GWIC x The Ethics Experts-Mary’s Episode

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.

Margarita Derelanko – She’s Going Places

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.

In late 2018, Mary and Lisa began advertising the launch of the Great Women in Compliance podcast, which would air on 6 December 2018.  Margarita Derelanko was one of the people who saw the marketing collateral and grew excited about the incoming podcast.  She affords Lisa and Mary the opportunity to hear what the launch of the podcast was like from the other side of the fence – the to-date missing aspect of their origin story – what the listenership was thinking and how the podcast was received.  Margarita shares how the podcast has impacted her life, including her takeaways from having her first article published, and the benefits she has gained from the encouragement of the hosts and guests.

Unlike many of the GWIC and certainly unlike Mary and Lisa, Margarita had the opportunity to choose whether or not to be in Compliance and she shares what it’s like for the new generation to consider joining the field – spoiler alert, Compliance Destiny appears yet again!  It’s a real thing folks!

Margarita shares some advice for helping to overcome biases when you don’t look like you fit the part.  She is of very small stature and is lucky enough to have youthful looks – causing some to make unfair judgments.  Listen in for how she overcomes the biases and consider how you can turn some of your perceived greatest weaknesses into a strength.

Following on from Mia Reini’s tips for putting together an engaging line up for the The Home Depot’s Compliance Summit, Margarita lends some tips from her experience on the planning team for the Waud Capital Partner’s Compliance Symposium to have a successful event.

Donna Schneider on Crucial Conversations

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.

Even if we weren’t in Compliance, the need to hold difficult conversations is part and parcel of participating in life in the human race.  And it’s also true that Compliance Officers sometimes need to deliver bad news or talk people out of ideas they are very attached to.  These responsibilities can lead to the need to invite important stakeholders to a crucial conversation with complex emotions involved.  Donna Schneider returns to the GWIC podcast to give us a lesson on Crucial Conversations after teaching courses on this topic in the past.  Since Donna last appeared on the show, she has been busy with her Compliance portfolio and shares an update on what she’s been up to with respect to risk assessments.

Shannon Walker – A Holistic Approach to Raising Concerns

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.

A critical topic for any ethics and compliance program is the ability for employees to raise concerns – from the initial speak-up process to the interview to the potential for retaliation: Shannon Walker, the founder, and CEO at WhistleBlower Security, Confidential Ethics Reporting & Case Management Solutions.

Shannon started in communications for large organizations in the US and Canada. She founded WhistleBlower Security with a vision to make the process easier and more comfortable for reporters while protecting organizations.  Lisa and Shannon have a wide-ranging conversation about the differences between telephone and online reporters, a provider’s responsibility to reporters and how that relates to their responsibilities to an organization and different ideas about how organizations can best “triage” in all parts of the investigation cycle.

Shannon has always been committed to diversity and ESG, and she also talks about how becoming a “B Corp” has been a great learning process and an excellent accomplishment.

Archana Shastri-Isn’t She Lovely

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.

Mary met Archana Shastri on her first day of work as Legal and Compliance Counsel at Tata Communications in Singapore in 2010.  The two were peers and became fast friends, bonding quickly as two of the quieter colleagues and, in fact, the only two Compliance colleagues in the Singapore headquarters.

 Archana, though now a Singaporean citizen, originally hails from India, and Mary asked Archana about some of the country’s cultural characteristics that might be of interest to Compliance Officers.  Archana also generally shares an update on the Asia Pacific region and comments on levels of activity from some of the local Compliance regulators and authorities.

 Mary asked Archana what she would like European and US-headquartered companies to know about the Asia Pacific region – Mary wholeheartedly stands behind Archana’s points on this one!

 Archana also details what it was like to study for her Master’s Degree in Anti-Corruption studies, a course based in Vienna.

 Archana wraps up the episode with some general commentary on the state and development of data privacy law in the Asia Pacific region.

Wendy Badger-Compliance from Soup to Nuts

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.

Mary and Lisa end the second GWIC semester with Wendy Badger. Wendy is Global Compliance Counsel at Tennant Company, where she oversees their global ethics and compliance program. She has worked in-house and in law firms, taking her experiences from one space and applying them to others. She is also an author, regular speaker, friend, and mentor to many – and one of the “OG GWICS” who has made this community grow.

Lisa and Wendy discuss a number of different topics, starting with remote investigations, which is top of mind for many of us these days. They talk about pitfalls, lessons learned, and some practical tips, including one from Wendy about how she makes interviewees more comfortable. They also talk about the impact of remote work on networking over the past few years, focusing on women and how that may change as the world continues to open up.

Wendy also shares some of her favorite advice and how she has made some of that advice her own. She also told Lisa what has now become one of the best stories about public speaking on the podcast!
