Great Women in Compliance 2.0 – A New Era

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Hemma Lomax.

GWIC is back to start the 2.0 era! We are very excited to be back, and to start out our new format and hear your views. One consistent thing about the GWIC community is how much you all accomplish and that happened with Lloydette. As you will hear, Lloydette has been offered an amazing government appointment. One of the downsides is that she needed to re-evaluate some of her public commitments. It made the most sense for her to step down from GWIC. During the hiatus, the inaugural Women in Compliance Summit took place, and it was a huge success. Hemma has also been a guest of the podcast (Episode 145), and an advocate of “Sending the Elevator Back Down, “ and was already helping behind the scenes.

We are thrilled to have Hemma as a co-host, and Ellen Hunt of Spark Compliance and Sarah Hadden of Corporate Compliance Insights as part of the GWIC team and supporting our larger discussions. All four of us will be in Chicago at the SCCE CEI the first week in October, and then the 4 of us will recap the conference for the October 10 episode and to officially kick off this semester.

Great Women in Compliance – GWICies and Thank You Mary

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, hosted by Mary Shirley and Lisa Fine.

It all started with a casual conversation between friends in October 2018 at an evening event in Las Vegas, and shortly thereafter, the Great Women in Compliance podcast was born, the first podcast on the Compliance Podcast Network that was not hosted by Tom Fox. For the last 4.5 years, Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley have worked on developing the podcast to best bring listeners quality content and this week, they reach their 200th episode. At this juncture, Mary passes the baton to Lloydette Bai-Marrow, who will be joining Lisa Fine as the newest #GWIC co-host. Join them after a summer break to tune in to the new iteration of the podcast.

In the meantime, this episode features mini interviews between Lisa and Mary, as well another round of the GWICies – the recognition (sometimes tongue in cheek) that Lisa and Mary have given during certain milestones since their 100th episode.

As she puts down the microphone, Mary extends gratitude to all of the listeners and guests who made the podcast what it is today. She also voices her huge appreciation for Lisa and the fruitful partnership over the last several years and looks forward to what is to come for the podcast, as the number one cheerleader for GWIC 2.0

Corporate Compliance Insights is a much-appreciated sponsor and supporter of GWIC, including affiliate organization CCI Press publishing the related book; “Sending the Elevator Back Down, What We’ve Learned from Great Women in Compliance” (CCI Press, 2020). If you enjoyed the book, the GWIC team would be very grateful if you would consider rating it on Goodreads and Amazon and leaving a short review.  Don’t forget to send the elevator back down by passing on your copy to someone who you think might enjoy reading it when you’re done, or if you can’t bear parting with your copy, consider it as a holiday or appreciation gift for someone in Compliance who deserves a treat.

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, hosted by Mary Shirley and Lisa Fine.

As part of the countdown to 200, Lisa and Mary have their last two episodes before the GWICies and the summer hiatus before GWIC 2.0.  Today, we get to announce our new co-host, Lloydette Bai-Marrow, who was featured in Episode 110.  She is the founding partner of Parametric Global Consulting ,a former prosecutor at the UK’s Serious Fraud Office, is a member of the Board of Spotlight on Corruption, a UK-based anti-corruption charity that tracks how the UK implements its anti-corruption laws and has a commitment to anti-corruption in Africa and particularly Sierra Leone.

She is also committed to sending the elevator back down and our community.  In the episode, she discusses how she decided to make time to add co-hosting this podcast to her full plate, and some of her ideas for GWIC 2.0.  Lloydette also talks about the impact that Mary has had in the E&C world, and how that inspired her to join Lisa on the journey.

We are very excited about this next phase for all of us, including Mary’s upcoming book and her ongoing column at Corporate Compliance Insights!

Notable Quotes:

“As a true supporter of women, you looked at us and said, ‘Why don’t you do it?’ And suddenly, right away, it went from this thing we talked about into something bigger than both of us and turned into a book where the people interested in this shared their stories.”

“The podcast started as a hobby but has become an intricate part of our lives, not only as individuals but at least as in my life as cohosts and friends.”

“And what I think was an honor for Lisa and myself as people who aren’t necessarily on the speaking circuit, that we wanted to get the diversity of thought and new voices on the show.”

“Everybody is a thought leader. I’m talking to you because I think you’re a thought leader, and I think you’re bringing something to the table that, again, in a way, which not to make somebody feel pressured into doing it But I also think that’s how I connect with people. Whether they like it or not, this is the conversation. And this is who I am.”

Great Women in Compliance – Lisa Fine on Change, Culture and Community

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, hosted by Mary Shirley and Lisa Fine.

A few years ago, Lisa committed to doing one solo episode a year, and here is the 2023 episode.  As she prepared (which is always a strange experience as it isn’t for a conversation with someone else, but a soliloquy), this became a theme of “threes” – she talks about 3 topics, all of which start with “C” the third letter of the alphabet.   These are change, culture and community.

In the change section, she gives some spoiler updates on the GWIC 2.0 format, among other things.  She also talks about some of the things on her mind about organizational culture and how that has changed – and not changed – as we continue into a post-pandemic life.  Lastly, in terms of community, she reflects on our E&C community, some exciting upcoming events and her appreciation of all of the support in moving forward from Mary and so many #GWICs.

Ellen Hunt with the 2023 Hunt Report

If CEOs have Larry Fink’s Annual Letter to CEOs, then Lisa has Ellen Hunt’s “Hunt Report.”  Ellen is Principal Consultant Advisor at Spark Compliance and is well known as a mentor and advocate to many in the E&C community.

Ellen has finished her first year as a “Sparkie,” and will update us on how that is going and what she is seeing and learning through her work.  For the past few years, Lisa and Ellen have talked about retaliation and what we can do better to protect people who raise concerns and those who are witnesses in investigations.  While we have seen some improvements, there is still a long way to go.  They also look at this in light of organizational justice and our workplaces.

They also continue the discussions of the past few weeks about kindness, fairness and equality, and how these impact our programs.  This can impact how we collaborate with DEI and ESG teams, to ensure ethical workplaces.

One other way you can improve your workplace is with employee recognition, and Mary’s “Living Your Best Compliance Life” column at Corporate Compliance Insights can provide some great insights on the benefits of doing so and some ideas that can brighten someone’s day.
