“The podcast started as a hobby but has become an intricate part of our lives, not only as individuals but at least as in my life as cohosts and friends.”

“And what I think was an honor for Lisa and myself as people who aren’t necessarily on the speaking circuit, that we wanted to get the diversity of thought and new voices on the show.”

“Everybody is a thought leader. I’m talking to you because I think you’re a thought leader, and I think you’re bringing something to the table that, again, in a way, which not to make somebody feel pressured into doing it But I also think that’s how I connect with people. Whether they like it or not, this is the conversation. And this is who I am.”

Julie Bregnard – Moving on Up

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, hosted by Mary Shirley and Lisa Fine. The Great Women in Compliance podcast’s guest for this week is Julie Bregnard, a Compliance professional who is relatively early into her career and going places fast.  Mary interviews Julie with a special focus on the job search, as Julie has just moved into a new role after five years at her first “real” job.  As discussed in the GWIC New Year episode several weeks ago to kick off 2023, the market for certain levels of Compliance staff is extremely favorable now.  Julie and Mary share some tips for further increasing job hunter success in the search.

Julie also reflects on her time as a new graduate looking for her first job after university.  Mary asked Julie to give some tips on subject as she received a request to do an episode that is helpful to students.  Though further back in time, Mary still remembers how painful and demoralizing the search for your first professional full-time role can be and with this in mind, asked Julie to share some advice and encouragement for students on how to best stay motivated and on task throughout this time.

As a Compliance practitioner who has been instrumental in strategizing on and delivering multiple Compliance Week events to her internal stakeholders, Julie provides some insights on what she thinks makes for a good Compliance Week and takes a broader view on how you can leverage them for ongoing dialogue in an organization.

SCCE Roundup with Lisa and Mary

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.

The 2022 Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics, Compliance and Ethics Institute took place last week in Phoenix, Arizona.  There was a mix of both in person and virtual attendees with a person presence significantly bolstered compared with the 2021 crowd, the first in person ECI since the pandemic hit.  In 2023 it really felt like things were back and the Great Women in Compliance podcast hosts, Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley, debrief listeners with a roundup of highlights and musings from the conference, as well as handing out a few prized GWICies.

Lisa and Mary both critically analyze some aspects of the conference and sessions, as well as take their usual lighthearted and informal approach to discussing what they thought went well, where there were areas of opportunity, surprises and how they each dealt with unforeseen challenges – from the beginning of the conference and throughout – including Lisa’s hangry misfortune and Mary nearly causing an international incident at a piano bar.

Join us for this special joint episode and re-live the conference for those that attended and cure your FOMO for those who were unable to make it.

GWIC x The Ethics Experts-Mary’s Episode

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.

For the next two weeks, the GWIC team are presenting a collab with ComplianceLine: GWIC X The Ethics Experts! Mary and Lisa start their throwback Wednesday sessions by harking all the way back to the early days of COVID19, where Mary’s episode was recorded while she was in the New Zealand coronavirus lockdown.

Gio Gallo interviewed Mary about her leadership style – especially focused on giving (junior) staff substantive, meaningful work and wings to fly while setting out a safety net, how not to slip into complacency in your Compliance program by being reassured of historical achievements, and understanding that there is no lowest common denominator. Learn how you can use surveys to tap into your most vulnerable areas you don’t even know you have.

Check out Lisa’s interview on the Ethics Experts here on the Great Women in Compliance Podcast on 19 October!

On 26 October, Mary and Lisa will return to their regular programming with a joint episode on learnings, insights, and observations from the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics Compliance and Ethics Institute. Want to be a part of the fun? Introduce yourself to Lisa and Mary at the conference – you’ll be able to spot them by their GWIC tote bags that Lisa kindly procured for the duo.

Jill Atstupenas-Hadley Maeve

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.
Trigger warning: This episode contains a baby loss story and theme.  The Great Women in Compliance Podcast often covers instances of “doing the right thing”.  We’ve previously done it regarding respect and dignity in the hiring process and today’s episode focuses on empathy and compassion by employers when employees suffer a tragedy.  Jill Atstupenas shares her and her husband’s story of losing their dearly desired baby girl, Hadley Maeve and provides some thoughtful considerations for how managers and company staff more broadly can respond in a way that shows support for the colleague and lets them know they are a valued member of staff.  Her ideas are practical, tangible and actionable items that will guide managers who truly care about their staff.  The title of today’s episode is our tribute to Hadley Maeve.
Jill also discusses how peers and other colleagues can help a colleague going through a difficult time to navigate it so that even if you’re not a manager, you can walk the walk of being a beacon of integrity in an organization.
We end the episode with Jill discussing some of the differences for Compliance Officers transitioning from a well-established large company, to a smaller one with less of a history.
