SCCE Roundup with Lisa and Mary

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.

The 2022 Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics, Compliance and Ethics Institute took place last week in Phoenix, Arizona.  There was a mix of both in person and virtual attendees with a person presence significantly bolstered compared with the 2021 crowd, the first in person ECI since the pandemic hit.  In 2023 it really felt like things were back and the Great Women in Compliance podcast hosts, Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley, debrief listeners with a roundup of highlights and musings from the conference, as well as handing out a few prized GWICies.

Lisa and Mary both critically analyze some aspects of the conference and sessions, as well as take their usual lighthearted and informal approach to discussing what they thought went well, where there were areas of opportunity, surprises and how they each dealt with unforeseen challenges – from the beginning of the conference and throughout – including Lisa’s hangry misfortune and Mary nearly causing an international incident at a piano bar.

Join us for this special joint episode and re-live the conference for those that attended and cure your FOMO for those who were unable to make it.

The Great Women in Compliance Podcast is on the Compliance Podcast Network with a selection of other Compliance related offerings to listen in to.  If you are enjoying this episode, please rate it on your preferred podcast player to help other likeminded Ethics and Compliance professionals find it.  If you have a moment to leave a review at the same time, Mary and Lisa would be so grateful.  You can also find the GWIC podcast on Corporate Compliance Insights where Lisa and Mary have a landing page with additional information about them and the story of the podcast.  Corporate Compliance Insights is a much appreciated sponsor and supporter of GWIC, including affiliate organization CCI Press publishing the related book; “Sending the Elevator Back Down, What We’ve Learned from Great Women in Compliance” (CCI Press, 2020).

If you enjoyed the book, the GWIC team would be very grateful if you would consider rating it on Goodreads and Amazon and leaving a short review.  Don’t forget to send the elevator back down by passing on your copy to someone who you think might enjoy reading it when you’re done, or if you can’t bear parting with your copy, consider it as a holiday or appreciation gift for someone in Compliance who deserves a treat.

GWIC x The Ethics Experts-Mary’s Episode

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.

For the next two weeks, the GWIC team are presenting a collab with ComplianceLine: GWIC X The Ethics Experts! Mary and Lisa start their throwback Wednesday sessions by harking all the way back to the early days of COVID19, where Mary’s episode was recorded while she was in the New Zealand coronavirus lockdown.

Gio Gallo interviewed Mary about her leadership style – especially focused on giving (junior) staff substantive, meaningful work and wings to fly while setting out a safety net, how not to slip into complacency in your Compliance program by being reassured of historical achievements, and understanding that there is no lowest common denominator. Learn how you can use surveys to tap into your most vulnerable areas you don’t even know you have.

Check out Lisa’s interview on the Ethics Experts here on the Great Women in Compliance Podcast on 19 October!

On 26 October, Mary and Lisa will return to their regular programming with a joint episode on learnings, insights, and observations from the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics Compliance and Ethics Institute. Want to be a part of the fun? Introduce yourself to Lisa and Mary at the conference – you’ll be able to spot them by their GWIC tote bags that Lisa kindly procured for the duo.

Jill Atstupenas-Hadley Maeve

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.
Trigger warning: This episode contains a baby loss story and theme.  The Great Women in Compliance Podcast often covers instances of “doing the right thing”.  We’ve previously done it regarding respect and dignity in the hiring process and today’s episode focuses on empathy and compassion by employers when employees suffer a tragedy.  Jill Atstupenas shares her and her husband’s story of losing their dearly desired baby girl, Hadley Maeve and provides some thoughtful considerations for how managers and company staff more broadly can respond in a way that shows support for the colleague and lets them know they are a valued member of staff.  Her ideas are practical, tangible and actionable items that will guide managers who truly care about their staff.  The title of today’s episode is our tribute to Hadley Maeve.
Jill also discusses how peers and other colleagues can help a colleague going through a difficult time to navigate it so that even if you’re not a manager, you can walk the walk of being a beacon of integrity in an organization.
We end the episode with Jill discussing some of the differences for Compliance Officers transitioning from a well-established large company, to a smaller one with less of a history.

The Lightning Round: Surprise Listener Questions for Mary and Lisa

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley. Lisa and Mary welcome listeners back to a new season with hot seat questions put forward by their audience without time to prepare. They also give a spoiler alert for their next joint episode as something to look forward to and think about your submissions for the future. Here are the questions Lisa and Mary tackled in this episode:

  • How do you continue to learn in order to stay on top of things in your role?
  • “If your ideal compliance leader was an animal, which animal, and why?”
  • When did you realize that GWIC has grown from the podcast to a larger community? Was there a moment for you?
  • If you had an extra $10k and had to spend it within the month- what would you do (personal or professional)?
  • As someone who is a global traveler, when you get to go home to New Zealand, once you recover from the flight, what is the first “local”/hometown thing you want?
  • Is it ever okay for an E&C investigator to employ deception when interviewing a subject? I’ve worked at companies that allow very limited exceptions and others that say “never.” A common exception involves a subject who might figure out who the reporter is (and then retaliate against her/him). As we seek to do everything and anything possible to prevent retaliation against reporters, the investigator might say to the subject during an interview (in a situation where the internal reporter is known to the investigator), “Please make no effort to guess or otherwise identify the reporter. Doing so risks violating our anti-retaliation policy. The reporter may be anonymous or from outside the company–it doesn’t matter. The bottom line is, you must refrain from trying to determine or conclude who it is.” Of course, nothing in this example is a lie, but it is deceptive given the investigator knows the reporter isn’t external or anonymous. Certain countries may have laws or regulations that answer this question but, importantly, the standards of an E&C investigation–at least in the United States–are not the same as a government-led investigation. Also, many E&C investigators are not licensed attorneys, so there are no “licensed professional” restrictions to consider. So, , do you think it’s okay for an E&C investigator, in rare and previously identified instances, to deceive an interviewee when doing so likely could have a material effect on protecting a reporter from retaliation?
  • What’s the biggest area (related to your current role) you are curious about and why?
  • What are some of the things you are researching right now? (Could be personal- could be professional, could be vague)
  • If there was one thing you could change about the way Compliance is perceived by people outside the profession, what would it be?
  • We often hear of the importance of the birds and the bees. But in the compliance world, if you could only pick the attributes of one, which would it be and why?

We hope that you enjoyed this episode and welcome any feedback you may wish to send in to gwicpod@gmail.com.
For those of you in the northern hemisphere, it is the season for beach reads and you may be traveling after a long break.  For your time off, you can pick up a copy (or download)  “Sending the Elevator Back Down: What We’ve Learned from Great Women in Compliance” (CCI Press, 2020).If you’ve already read the booked and liked it, will you help out other women to make the decision to leverage off the tips and advice given by rating the book and giving it a glowing review on Amazon?

A Mary Soliloquy

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.
We love getting inspiration from great places and what a better a place to gain inspiration for an episode than one of our sister podcasts on the Compliance Podcast Network?!  In this week’s episode, Mary channels the Everything Compliance team and walks through her list of rants and raves for the moment.
We boo misogyny in the workplace (and well, everywhere if we’re frank), erosion of Chief Compliance Officer authority and treating job seekers with disrespect.
We celebrate male allies of feminism in Compliance, those volunteering for Compliance Career Connection and all of our listeners who keep an open mind as to different perspectives while investing in growth and professional development.
We like to share advice and tips on the podcast via our learned guests but some things don’t have immediate answers, including some aspects of what we’ve canvassed today.  If you’d like to share your thoughts on the issues raised, we invite you to connect with us at GWICpod@gmail.com.
The Great Women in Compliance Podcast is proudly featured on the Compliance Podcast Network and sponsored by Corporate Compliance Insights.  If you enjoyed this episode please subscribe to the podcast and rate it on your podcast player to help other compliance professionals find it.  Want to hear more from us?  We have a book, “Sending the Elevator Back Down: What We’ve Learned from Great Women in Compliance” (CCI Press, 2020) which is available on Amazon.com and Book Depository.
