One Month to a More Effective Board – 20 Questions Directors Should Ask about the Board Compliance Committee

In an area of inquiry entitled Oversight, the 2023 ECCP asks three basic questions which we have explored throughout this chapter:

1. What compliance expertise has been available on the Board of Directors?

2. Have the Board of Directors held executive or private sessions with the compliance function?

3. What types of information has the Board of Directors examined in their exercise of oversight in the area in which the misconduct occurred?

To facilitate the answers to these questions, consider this list of 20 questions to reflect the oversight role of directors. These are questions the Board should ask of both senior management and the Board should ask itself. The questions are not intended to be an exact checklist, but rather a way to provide insight and stimulate discussion on the topic of compliance. Megan and I go in a different direction for our next sci-fi series as we take up the 2002 series Firefly. The show is an American space Western drama television series. The series is set in the year 2517, after the arrival of humans in a new star system, and follows the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a “Firefly-class” spaceship. The ensemble cast portrays the nine characters who live on Serenity. Join the dynamic and delightful hosts Tom Fox and Megan Dougherty as they dive into the latest episode of Firefly in their podcast, Because That’s What Heroes Do!

 

In this episode of the show, Mal had an intuition that Jayne was going to betray the crew, and his suspicions were confirmed when Jane sold the siblings out for a significant reward. Despite this, the Serenity team was able to rescue the siblings, and Simon praised Jayne for his efforts, unaware of his betrayal. The crew was able to achieve their criminal objectives and get a win, but it came at a heavy price. Tom Fox and Megan Dougherty discussed the episode, exploring the interpersonal issues between the characters and the consequences of Jayne’s betrayal.
