Beyond the Label Podcast: May Mental Health Events and Crisis/Outpatient Care Overview with Dr. Kristopher Steinke

Welcome to the newest podcast on the Texas Hill Country Podcast Network, Beyond the Label. This podcast is the story of the Hill Country Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Centers (the Hill Country MHDD Centers). Today, the Hill Country MHDD Centers is one of 39 agencies that deliver mental health and developmental disability services in communities across Texas. Hill Country MHDD Centers has 22 locations, including 15 mental health clinics, serving a population of approximately 816,000 across a 22,714-square-mile area.

In this first episode of Hill Country MHDD’s podcast, Beyond the Label, we introduce the staff and the purpose of Hill Country MHDD: to share mental health knowledge, recovery stories, and community support across 19 counties. The team outlines May Mental Health Awareness Month activities including a Harry Potter-themed Fredericksburg School of Wellness and Recovery (12–3 at Marktplatz), a Junction summer carnival featuring a mobile clinic van, art shows in New Braunfels and Llano (including kids’ art with Facebook voting), and a May 30 San Antonio Missions “mental health night” with jersey fundraising and the CEO throwing the first pitch. Psychiatrist and CMO Dr. Kristopher Steinke describes his training and Hill Country roles, the CSU’s 14-day crisis diversion model, access barriers (distance, transport, acuity limits), prescriber recruitment via contracts and UT San Antonio telemedicine rotations, outpatient services across ages, and clinical overviews of major depression, bipolar I, schizophrenia, and related conditions, emphasizing help-seeking, medication adherence, and therapy (including CBT).

Beyond the Label Podcast: Hill Country MHDD’s Family Partner Program and the YES Waiver

Welcome to the newest podcast on the Texas Hill Country Podcast Network, Beyond the Label. This podcast is the story of the Hill Country Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Centers (the Hill Country MHDD Centers). Today, the Hill Country MHDD Centers are one of 39 agencies that deliver mental health and developmental disability services in communities across Texas. Hill Country MHDD Centers has 22 locations, including 15 mental health clinics, serving approximately 816,000 people across a 22,714-square-mile area. The members are Kelsi Wilmot (Director of Community Development), Tyler Townsend (Communication Specialist), and Wanda Ferguson (Lead Family Partner).

They introduce Hill Country MHDD’s new podcast, intended to help audiences learn about staff, lived experience, and agency programs. Ferguson explains the Family Partner role, emphasizing advocacy for caregivers, collaboration with schools and juvenile justice, and skills-based supports such as the nurturing program to help families accommodate a child’s needs while maintaining structure and boundaries. She shares personal motivation connected to her son Ryan’s mental health challenges and death in 2016 and provides examples of helping families avoid juvenile detention, address safety risks, and stabilize at home. The team describes the YES Waiver as a wraparound, grant-funded service designed to keep children in their homes and reduce hospitalizations or residential placements and notes that services are optional and Medicaid-billable.

She is also a Mental Health First Aid Instructor with Mental Health First Aid England, training individuals to recognise, respond to, and support mental health needs in corporate and community settings.

Lynette combines her legal expertise, psychological insight, and educational experience to help organisations move beyond minimum legal requirements toward cultures where all employees can thrive. For her, compliance leadership means empowering people and institutions to make inclusion a lived, everyday practice.

Trekking Through Compliance – Episode 53 – Ethical Lessons from The Ultimate Computer

In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode The Ultimate Computer, which aired on March 8, 1968, and occurred on Star Date 4729.4.

The Enterprise is ordered to be part of a test of the new M5 Multitronic System, a computer designed to replace a starship crew. In an unscheduled drill at Alpha Carinae 2, M5 defends the Enterprise against attacks from the starships Excalibur and Lexington. The M5 is declared the victor of the simulated contest, prompting Commodore Bob Wesley to call Kirk “Captain Dunsel.” Spock explains the meaning of “dunsel” to McCoy as a term used by midshipmen at the Federation Academy for a part that serves no useful purpose.

In a short time, however, M5 takes control of the Enterprise. Daystrom is surprised by the M5’s actions but views its behavior as mistakes made by a “child” who is still learning. At the scheduled rendezvous point, the M5 attacks the Excalibur, Lexington, Hood, and Potemkin.

Kirk finally shuts off M5 by pointing out that killing humans has violated its programming of saving men from dangerous activities such as space exploration. Since the penalty for murder is death, the M5 concludes that it must die and shuts itself down. Daystrom is committed to a rehabilitation program, but Spock still refuses to respond to McCoy’s prodding that human compassion outweighs any advantages computers may have in computational ability.

Commentary

The plot revolves around Captain Kirk and the Enterprise crew testing Dr. Daystrom’s M5 Multitronic System, a computer designed to replace the starship’s crew. As the M5 takes control and makes autonomous decisions, it leads to dire consequences, including unwarranted attacks on other starships. Tom Fox discusses the episode’s ethical dilemmas, such as balancing efficiency and humanity, autonomy and accountability, and preserving human expertise. The episode also provides commentary on the societal impacts of mechanization during the 1960s. Additionally, Fox highlights the importance of monitoring mental health within teams, especially in hybrid working environments. The key takeaway is navigating emerging technologies’ complexities while upholding ethical principles and human values.

Mental Health and Compliance Officers

The award-winning, Compliance into the Weeds is the only weekly podcast that takes a deep dive into a compliance-related topic, literally going into the weeds to explore a subject. This episode considers the very prescient topic of mental health and compliance officers. There is a mental health crisis in the U.S. workforce today, which also applies to compliance officers. Matt recently moderated a webinar hosted by Ethico on how mental health issues can affect corporate culture and compliance officers. The panelists included Paul Liebman, head of compliance at Harvard University; Sarah Ross, a former compliance officer at Novartis who now runs a consulting business on burnout, depression, and related issues; and Nick Gallo, co-CEO at Ethico.

Some of the highlights included:

  • How the Covid-19 pandemic accelerated the issues of mental health for all workers.
  • We had some great suggestions from the panelists and webinar participants.
  • Understanding the difference between mental health and mental illness is critical.
  • Consider how your company could weave mental health awareness into training, especially manager training.
  • Define boundaries between work and personal life.
  • Finding a friend in your field can be a critical mental health safety check. If you feel like you have someone to speak to about stress, you’re more likely to understand and confront that stress. True for compliance officers and other employees alike.
  • There is a strong connection between mental health and a speak-up culture generally. If employees feel afraid to speak up about feeling stressed or overworked, would they be equally reluctant to speak up about misconduct?

Mental Health Doesn’t Matter If…

Mental health doesn’t matter at work if you don’t care about performance, employee retention, and the culture of your organization.
If you do care about the performance from your team and retaining your best employees, then it’s time (maybe way past time) to address the mental health of your individual team members. Many of today’s employee’s demand the mental health concern from their employer’s and leaders.
As always, let’s not make it harder than it has to be!
