Welcome to the Kerrville Weekly News Roundup. Each week, veteran podcaster Tom Fox and his colleagues Andrew Gay and Gilbert Paiz get together to go over a couple of their favorite stories from the past week from Kerrville and the greater Hill Country. We each consider two of our favorite stories and talk about the upcoming weekend’s events which will enjoy or participate in this weekend.

In this episode, Tom and Andrew discuss the following stories which caught their attention over the past week.

·      Tom talks about the Kerrville Folk Festival, Parker Wolf and his grandparents from Centerpoint, Janet and Jim Wolf. Parker will play at Carnegie Hall this summer. He ends by reminding folks to be careful about being outside in the heat.  and Camp Stewart celebrating its centennial this year.

·      Andrew talks about the Meals on Wheels for pets program at Dieter Center, which received a matching grant from PetSmart. They also delve into the topic of human smuggling and issues at the southern border and concludes with the Shatter the Stigma 5K and fun run on Saturday, June 10, at Schreiner University’s Trailhead Beer Garden to raise awareness for mental Health.

Trekking Through Compliance: Episode 8 – Miri

In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode Miri which aired on October 27, 1966, Star Date 2713.5.

A disfigured man attacks a landing party who dies after Kirk strikes him. They discover a preadolescent, Miri, who ran away from them because “grups” kill and maim children before dying. She and her friends are “onlies,” the only ones left. The distress call is traced to an automated signal. The landing party, except for Spock, notices purple lesions on their bodies; Miri tells them that these are the first signs of the disease, and they will soon become like the other adults. When the disease begins, its victims have seven days to live. Although Spock is immune, he considers himself a carrier who could infect the Enterprise if he returns.

Back on the Enterprise, after vaccinating everyone and leaving the children in the care of a medical team, Kirk sends for teachers and advisers to help the children improve their lives.

One Month to a More Effective Compliance Program with Boards – OIG Guidance for Boards Regarding Compliance

The OIG white paper “Practical Guidance for Health Care Governing Boards on Compliance Oversight (OIG Guidance), provides an excellent road map for thinking about how to structure a Compliance Committee for your Board and a Board’s obligations. As an introduction, the OIG Guidance states that a Board must act in good faith around its obligations regarding compliance. This means that there must be both a corporation information and reporting system and that such reporting mechanisms provide appropriate information to a Board. It states: The existence of a corporate reporting system is a key compliance program element, which not only keeps the Board informed of the activities of the organization but also enables an organization to evaluate and respond to issues of potentially illegal or otherwise inappropriate activity.

The OIG Guidance sets out four areas of Board oversight and review of a compliance function:

  1. Roles of, and relationships between, the organization’s audit, compliance, and legal departments;
  2. Mechanism and process for issue-reporting within an organization;
  3. Approach to identifying regulatory risk; and
  4. Methods of encouraging enterprise-wide accountability for the achievement of compliance goals and objectives.

The OIG Guidance is an excellent review for not only compliance professionals and others in the healthcare industry but a good primer for Boards around their duties under a best practices compliance program. The U.S. Sentencing Guidelines, the Hallmarks of an Effective Compliance Program, the OIG Guidance, and OIG Corporate Integrity Agreements can be used as baseline assessment tools for Boards and management in determining what specific functions may be necessary to meet the requirements of an effective compliance program.
